Q)Please introduce yourself.
I am a pianist first of all, writes song and makes concerts.
Q)What kind of work you’ll be doing at P.Art.y
I like a work that has very different styles and elements incorporated and mixed, such as jazz, tango, contemporary music, so that each member of the audience can get something they like out of one piece of work. This performance will also be something like that with 5-6 different styles of music.
Q)Then it would be hard to define the genre of your music. Can you describe it
It is very easy. My genre is ‘all I want to do’. Each time I start working, different motivation and inspirations came up to make something new, something that I feel like doing at that moment.
Q)Are there any other styles of music that you want to work on
Yes. I have lots of inspirations and strange ideas about new performance. For example, many musicians can play different types of music in each cell of Seodaemoon Prison and at the end all came out of the cell to play together. Sometimes, I’d like to play contemporary music or Bach all alone without any audience. It seems I’ve done only 1% of what I’d like to do.
Q)Your work seems boundary-free.
Yes, the boundary is in my brain, but I don’t even know what I would think of next moment.
Q)Other members share these ideas
The team title ‘Collage’ itself has a nature of free spirits. There is no set boundary nor the rules. Each time, new member can join in and make a whole new one. Main members is Chang Woo Choi and myself and other members are different each time.
Q)How the Collage members get together for P.Art.y
They all are my long-term friends. Choi Sun Bae, he’s a great trumpet player and the 1st generation of Korean free jazz. Kyung-Ho Son, drummer, is our old friend as well as long-term collaborator since the group Button. MC Dnah, rapper, worked together on the previous album and still playing together with us.
Q)How the collaboration with the visual artist, Hyo Jung Seo, will be crystallized at P.Art.y
We have good chemistry. We’ve been having a lot of meetings and share some strange but beautiful ideas, which make me feel richer. Music leads the visual at some scenes, and the visual does at the others. Visuals interact with motions and gestures of musicians or with the sound. At some parts, musicians improvise according to the live visual, it really varies.
Q)What do you define P.Art.y 2007
P.Art.y is a bath. You can enjoy yourself to sweat a lot, spit out inner guts, get cleaned-up and move onto the next day of your everyday life. It is a purifying process.
